Decorative fern-like leaves and bamboo-like stems earn this landscape mainstay the name ‘Heavenly Bamboo’. Graceful and delicate in appearance, Nandina are actually among the most durable, adaptable and widely used landscape plants. The varieties differ greatly, from the bold red ‘Firepower’, to the fine, lacy, fern-like ‘San Gabriel’, there are varieties available to suit just about any landscape need. Pot Sizes: 6, 8, 10, inches and Bedding Container Size and Finish Time: 1 liner per 1 gallon pot finishes in 20 weeks. 1 liner per 2 gallon pot finishes in 32-36 weeks. 1 liner per 3 gallon pot finishes in 36-40 weeks Potting Mix: "Recommend to use a soil mix that is equal parts Canadian peat, bark and sand. Components must be free of weed seed and disease contamination. " Lighting Requirements: Light levels of 7500-9500 foot-candles are recommended. Optimum growth is at 8500 foot-candles Temperature Requirements: Optimum temperatures can range from 80 to 90 degrees F. Nandina species are very cold-hardy and can sustain themselves at temperatures below freezing when under an optimal nutrition program. Water Requirements: "The soil needs to be kept moist, but not saturated. Nandina does best when kept on the dry side, but do not allow to wilt." Fertilizer Requirements: "Incorporate a time release fertilizer into your growing medium and constant feed with a 2-1-2 ratio at 200-250 PPM Nitrogen. If weekly injection is used, 400 PPM Nitrogen is recommended. Be sure to saturate the soil mass prior to fertilization to prevent high salt build up." Growth Regulators: No growth regulators recommended Common Problems: "Pests include thrips, caterpillars and mites. Diseases include Pythium and Rhizoctonia. To prevent fungal problems, keep foliage dry going into the night. " | ||
